Shifting Boundaries: The 2018 Teen/Artist Summit

Thursday, March 8, 2018 - 5:00pm to 8:00pm

At the 2018 Teen/Artist Summit, high school students from CAPE’s after-school program will present their work to professional artists, receive feedback, and learn about professional artists’ work and practices. Our student-artists from North-Grand High School and George Washington High School will have the opportunity to present and receive feedback on their artwork, and dialogue with local practicing artists. Notable artists in attendance will include Mitsu Salmon, Jesse Malmed, Marcela Torres, the Chicago ACT Collective, Marc Fischer, Mirtes Zwierzynski, Anni Holm, Ben Murray, Juan-Carlos Perez, William Estrada, Vanessa Valliere, and many more.

How can the collaborative work of teachers, artists, parents and students in public schools redefine the boundaries between the classroom and the community? Between the neighborhood community and the rest of the city? For the past three years, Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE) has partnered with four Chicago neighborhood schools to implement ongoing projects that partner local artists with Chicago Public School teachers, parents, and students. This network of partnerships has been actively representing, engaging, and communicating with their respective neighborhood communities through a practice of artistic research and localized exhibition. Shifting Boundaries explores what happens when these distinct neighborhood-based school groups come together for a citywide interaction to inform their own work and connect to external audiences.
