Chicago Director / Funny Bones Improv

About Funny Bones Improv:Funny Bones Improv is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to share the gifts and benefits of laughter with sick children, their families, and their caregivers through volunteer improve comedy performances in multiple hospitals across New Orleans and Chicago.


Overview: The Chicago Director reports to the Program Manager(based in New Orleans) and is relied upon to serve as a leader for Funny Bones Improv in the Chicago community.  The Chicago Director will advise the Program Manager on improvements on the running of the Chicago team through changes to current scheduling, team events, team building, etc. The Chicago Director needs to be able to achieve goals with minimal supervision.


Hours:  The current structure is 20 hours per month (averaging five hours per week). This isn’t set in stone and is open to discussion.


Personnel Management—Improv (approximately 30%)

  • Hire and maintain a cast of performers who best represent the mission of FBI
  • Hold and coach regular rehearsals to optimize the quality of improv at our regular hospital shows and community events
  • Evaluate players as individuals and as a team on a regular basis
  • Troubleshoot issues that compromise the integrity of our shows
  • Teach and coach short-form improv games per the FBI Games Guide


Personnel Management—Logistics (approximately 20%)

  • Create/update and enforce attendance policies for rehearsals and shows
  • Be accessible via phone/email to players when emergencies arise that conflict with shows/rehearsal attendance
  • Assist in sub coverage for shows when needed


Hospital Partnerships (approximately 30%)

  • Maintain close relationships with our existing hospital partners/Child Life Departments
  • Outreach to new hospitals to expand our schedule
  • Schedule shows and special events (as needed)
  • General maintenance of show props and equipment (wheel, medals, game pieces, etc.)


Community Outreach and Partnerships (approximately 20%)

  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners, new and existing
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners to schedule community/pay-for-play shows
Skills & Qualifications: 

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of a comprehensive improv comedy training program
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work under the direction of the FBI Program Manager and Board of Directors
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google Docs, Google Calendars, and other computer/internet programming preferred
