Organization Overview

The People's Music School is a 40-year old institution that has brought the transformative benefits of music to over 10,000 lives across Chicago. Our model is completely tuition-free. We serve kids age 5-18 who otherwise would not be able to afford music education. Since music education has benefits that extend far beyond the artistic benefits, we view ourselves as an institution building future leaders. We build cognitive, academic, and social-emotional skills through an intense and rigorous curriculum. Our students learn with us for up to 12 hours per week and their families fulfill a significant volunteer time requirement. In the last 3 years, the school has grown more than 2X under new leadership composed of alumni from Bain & Company and A Better Chicago, and world-class experience from a newly energized Board of Directors. Job Summary

The SLAM Program Manager is the information hub for our Saturday high school honors program, leading students, faculty, parents and community partners toward the TPMS mission and yearly goals. S/he has high artistic standards, a make-it-work mentality and is direct and approachable, particularly with teens. S/he is flexible to the needs of a fast-paced music school and has experienced insight into how to grow a high school honors program that embodies artistic excellence, college-readiness, and character development. In addition, exceptional organizational skills, an appreciation for diversity, and ability to embody our culture will set successful candidates apart.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage SLAM program to achieve organizational goals related to repertoire, instrumentation, program growth, curriculum implementation, budget, fundraising, and community engagement

  • Manage SLAM faculty, including hiring, scheduling, and observation, mentoring, and providing professional development

  • Maintain student databases, including attendance, student outcomes, fundraising and service hours
  • Organize and administer all student activities (i.e. concerts, field trips, and master classes) and draft schedules and calendars for programs
  • Facilitate and/or lead faculty, family, and partner meetings

  • Communicate regularly with high school students via phone, e-mail, and social media

  • In collaboration with administrative staff, develop an annual workshop calendar for students that incorporates artistic excellence, college readiness, and character development

  • Manage summer ambassador program, overseeing summer festival auditions, summer leadership opportunities, and scholarship applications

  • Manage mentor program, engaging external mentors with students in college-readiness workshops

  • Collaborate with Development team on funding proposal preparation, data collection, funder/donor site visits, and marketing materials

  • Collect and analyze student outcomes data (e.g. juries, attendance, grades, behavior reports)

  • Demonstrate a commitment to TPMS core values: opportunity, excellence, hard work, creativity and community

  • Other duties and responsibilities may be required and/or assigned as necessary. 
Requirements
Skills & Qualifications: 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum level of education required is a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; major in music administration, performance, education or related field. Musical background required
  • 2-4 years of management/leadership experience (non-profit or for-profit sector), working in a fast-paced environment
  • 2-4 years of experience working with high school students in youth development setting 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work with people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds 
  • Exceptional time management and organization skills, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and complete at a high level 
  • Computer skills required include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google (Drive)
  • Knowledge of other music education and/or sound production software a plus 
  • Ability to work 20 hours per week as SLAM Program Manager, including Saturdays from 8am – 4pm NOTE: potential for SLAM Program Manager position to be bundled with another role at TPMS for a more full time role
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
