Spring 2018 Gallery Internship

moniquemeloche, a contemporary art gallery located in Wicker Park, is looking to hire a well-organized, detail oriented Gallery Intern for Spring 2018, with a possibility to extend thru Summer. The Gallery Intern should have a background in Art History (or related field) and considerable art administrative and art handling experience. He/she/they must have excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as a professional demeanor.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, trustworthy, efficient, ambitious, and eager to ask questions. The Gallery Intern position is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in Arts Administration, as you will become acquainted with all that is involved in curating and installing exhibitions– from managing artwork inventory and databases, to promoting and speaking effectively about artists and their work, as well as gaining familiarity with collectors, institutions, curators, etc.

Skills & Qualifications:

In addition to being personable and knowledgeable about gallery artists and projects, the Intern will work on a variety of projects including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Manage all gallery archives, on paper and electronically. This includes formatting press files, updating artist CVs and bios, maintaining image archives, updating the gallery website, and ensuring artist binders are complete and up to date.
  • Work with the gallery database, Artsystems GalleryPro (some proficiency with this or similar programs would be most beneficial), to review our inventory of artworks and insure all locations/media/sizes/images/etc. are correctly input and all artworks correctly labeled and accounted for.
  • Managing Gallery's social media presence on Facebook and Instagram, by drafting and scheduling posts promoting our exhibitions, artist press, etc.
  • Help with installing, de-installing, and art packing and should be comfortable with basic art handling.
  • Additionally, the Intern will be responsible for securing the physical space on occasions that staff is away for studio and site visits. They may be asked to oversee the gallery operations while staff is away for art fairs, requiring the Intern be alone on site anywhere from 1-5 days, with tasks emailed to them daily.

The Gallery Intern will work 1-2 days a week, 7 hours each day from 11am-6pm. Available days are Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Sat.

The Intern will occasionally be required to attend events hosted at the gallery (opening receptions, artist talks, etc.) to assist with housekeeping and serving refreshments to visitors. Therefore we would prefer that the candidate is 21 or over.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, WordPress, and social media programs like Facebook and Instagram is required.
